Anatomy of a threshold + Threshold Ritual

Thresholds, whether they are major life transitions, seasons or daily energetic shifts  - require two things.

We have to let go of something and enter the unknown. A threshold can be quite destabilising if we don’t do both willingly.

I have designed a simple yet powerful ritual that brings stability to any threshold experience.

But before we get there – let’s take a closer look at thresholds through the lens of a humble symbol that is central to my own creative and spiritual practice, my physical wellbeing, and contains the scope of all my work.

I'm refering to the ampersand. It is most commonly used to symbolise the word and. One of the most common words in the english language. Nothing special, then, and yet. Something ends, and... it’s not actually over. And/& bridges two separate things and creates connection.

A tiny word that contains multitudes. A word practically bursting with promise.

The ampersand at the centre of burn & dye is not just a branding signal it is a power symbol.

The snake gives it some edge. It sheds in order to transform. The Cosmic symbols of the sun and moon bring balance between opposing energies – between dark and light, the seen and the unseen. But the ampersand doesn’t even need these extra flourishes to expand its meaning.

It symbolises a threshold and many things.

the eternal

the in-between,

liminality,

and change itself.

It represents the tension between opposites, two truths, two states. It is both/and. It is the unknown and it is pure potential.

It is the very moment change occurs. It is all moments, and the present moment.

It is a boundary that enters into boundless time.

You are never the same when you come out the other side.

It is life changing.

So do I have your attention?

The Threshold ritual works with a shift of attention within and towards the threshold. Towards everything the humble ampersand holds. It is an anchor that holds your centre through turbulence. It prevents you from drifting off into the void.

It brings you down to earth while you dream.

The ritual can be used in any moment, in endless ways, repeated whenever you need it, as often as you like. In fact it becomes more powerful the more attention you feed it.

Before long the threshold you were too scared to cross, because you held on too tight, because you resist the mystery, will start to look more like a melting pot of possibility than a dangerous void. You might even start going on purpose!

Big claims for a tiny symbol and a simple ritual. But I got you boo. I’ve created clear guidance for the Threshold, and I’m serving it up 3 ways.

Threshold Ritual — 3 ways

  1. To weather a threshold – Find stability and embrace the unknown as you move through a challenging season or transition.
  2. To create a threshold  - Yes, on purpose, in any moment -  to initiate meaningful change.
  3. To liberate your practice  -  Engage with threshold energy + attention to connect with the world, find your natural rhythm, claim agency and explore your creative edge.
